Emporia becomes Sweden’s first BREEAM certified shopping center
Steen & Ström’s shopping center Emporia in Malmö has been BREEAM certified which makes it to the first Swedish shopping center with this certification.
“Becoming Sweden’s first BREEAM certified shopping center is a big thing and it should be clear when visiting or working in the building. It should be obvious and easy to chose sustainable solutions at Emporia, whether you want to go by train or bus, charge your electric car, eat ecological food or go for sustainable shopping,” said Frederik Ekelund, Center Manager at Emporia.
BREEAM is the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings with 250,000 buildings with certified BREEAM assessment ratings. A BREEAM assessment uses recognised measures of performance, which are set against established benchmarks, to evaluate a building’s specification, design, construction and use. The measures used represent a broad range of categories and criteria from energy to ecology. They include aspects related to energy and water use, the internal environment (health and well-being), pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management processes.
Emporia is the first shopping center to receive the final BREEAM certification Very Good. The roof park has been an important part of the environmental work, states Emporia, and has also been awarded the Scandinavian Green Roof Award 2013. The roof minimizes noise, delays surface water and provides isolation. It has also contributed to increase the biodiversity in Hyllie.
