Historical agreement on Stockholm subway expansion
According to a new agreement the Stockholm subway system will be expanded and 78 000 new housings will be built.
The historical agreement has been reached between the Swedish government’s negotiator and the Stockholm County Council, the city of Stockholm, the municipality of Nacka, the city of Solna and the municipality of Järfälla. The new agreement means that the subway will be expanded to Nacka, Arenastaden and Barkarby and that the blue line will be expanded to Gullmarsplan and connected to the green line for increased capacity through central Stockholm. The expansion of the subway system is expected to start in 2016 at the latest.
The congestion tax will be raised and implented in 2016 at Essingeleden to contribute to the financing, write the four party leaders Fredrik Reinfeldt, Jan Björklund, Annie Lööf and Göran Hägglund in the newspaper Dagens Nyheter. The agreement involves nine new subway stations and a total investment of SEK 19.5 billion. Together with former investments the expansion of the subway system is according to the four party leaders the biggest one in modern time.
As part of the agreement the municipalities will also construct around 78 000 new housings in the county.
