The world’s most eco-friendly cruise ship
M/S Viking Grace, allegedly the most environmentally friendly large cruise vessel ever built, has started operating between the city of Turku in Finland and the Swedish capital Stockholm.
The 2,800-passenger ferry was built by STX Finland and is powered by Wärtsilä engines from Finland which use Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as fuel. According to Invest in Finland, the ship dramatically cuts sulphur oxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions by using Liquefied Natural Gas as fuel. Thus, the ship is able to sail without restrictions in Sulphur Emission Control Areas and Nitrogen Emission Control Areas.
Furthermore, particulate matter emissions will also be cut by more than 90% compared to emissions from conventional diesel engines, with carbon dioxide emissions reduced by 20-30 percent, reports the Marine Log.
